Polychromos pencils use an oil-based lead rather than the wax-based lead in most student pencils. The color goes down dense, layers and blends over many passes, and resists smudging and water once on the paper. The leads are 3.8 mm thick and bonded to the full length of the barrel through Faber-Castell's SV process, which helps prevent internal breaks and keeps points intact during sharpening. The lightfastness rating is printed on the barrel, so an artist can check a color before using it in work meant to last. The colors match Faber-Castell's wider Art and Graphic system, including the Pitt artist pens and Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils. The barrels are made in Germany from PEFC-certified wood.
